foot in mouth, anyone?

Quick confession:

Something's been in the back of my mind for a few years. In '95 or '96, I was working with a very nice lady named Alice. She was 8 months pregnant. One day, her baby stopped moving. She was going to leave early and go to the doctor. I asked her if she was going to finish the report she was working on. Being the gracious person she is, she just said no. She ended up losing the baby. She had to deliver it stillborn. I still feel bad about this. How could I have been so insensitive? I mean, I don't like kids, but geez.

I've talked to her a few times since then, but was afraid to broach the subject. I don't want to risk reminding her of such a painful time by selfishly getting this off my chest. Fortunately, she was able to have another baby who is healthy. That relieves me, and also the fact that knowing Alice, she didn't hold it against me or judge my character on that one incident. And I think I'm a better person now than I was then.

Whew. I've never told anyone about that. I guess I was ashamed.
